More about our Potatoes

  • It is thought that Sir Walter Raleigh first brought potatoes to England from the New World in the 17th Century although the French claim they invented the fried Potato chip.
  • The British eat 103kg of Potatoes per person every year and 20% of all our meals include Potatoes.
  • During the Second World War the National Favourite dish- Fish and Chips- were among the few foods not to be rationed. This is due to the Home Office believing it would lower morale through the country.
  • One medium sized Potato has more potassium than a Banana.
  • There are around 500 varieties of Potato although only about 80 of these varieties are grown commercially. The most popular Potato grown commercially is the Maris Piper due to it being a great all round Potato perfet for all cooking methods.
